Panel on Southeast Asian Contemporary Practices: Wawi Navarroza, Gary-Ross Pastrana, and more

Happening on 4 October 2023 is Panel on Southeast Asian Contemporary Photographic Practices featuring artists Wawi Navarroza, Gary-Ross Pastrana, John Clang, Yee I-Lan, and the Senior Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia, Gael Newton at SAM 8Q, Singapore. The speakers will talk about photography in Southeast Asia in conjunction with the exhibit, “Still Moving: A Triple Bill on the Image” showing from 3 October 2023 to 8 February 2024 at Singapore Art Museum.
Wawi Navarroza is a visual artist and professional photographer based in Manila, Philippines. Her contemporary photography style has taken an interest in still life and landscapes which map out sites found in nature and urban spaces relocated into photographs and pieced together by memory and/pr amnesia.
Gary-Ross Pastrana is markedly known for combining concepts with objects in his artworks. As a result, his work is loaded with poetic intensity that remain unobtrusively subtle and almost quaint in its appearance. He would coil or fold photographs, weaving his own tale from pictures found in the internet and tie his shirt into a pole to make flag to create a new text within the objects.
